“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on these things” (St. Paul to the Philippians 4:8).
The St. Anselm Institute for Catholic Thought is a voluntary organization of Catholic faculty and others dedicated to promoting the vast, life-affirming riches of the Catholic intellectual tradition at the University of Virginia and beyond. Founded in 2000, the Institute supports several activities, including a public lecture series, various reading and discussion groups including a Doctors of the Church lunch seminar series, Catholic arts programs, faculty-student dinners and local field trips, Lenten retreats, and our annual appeal to support Catholic education in Saltadère, Haiti.

Welcome back UVA Students! This Fall (2020), the St. Anselm Institute for Catholic Thought is offering two free, non-credit, and faculty-led minicourses for interested UVA students regardless of their study area. The selected readings are short, and there are no papers, quizzes or exams. Prior expertise is not expected, but space in our September Zoom meetings is limited, so registration is requested. FAITH AND SCIENCE (Fall 2020)
5 Friday mornings via Zoom, 10:00-11:15am
September 18, 25, October 2, 9, and 16

The goal of our two Fall minicourses is to provide an introduction to essential ideas of the Catholic intellectual tradition that hopefully nurtures a more mature understanding and appreciation of their history and substance. It is no secret that many within secular universities like UVA believe that authentic faith commitments, especially Catholic ones, require a deep partitioning and privatization from one's intellectual and professional pursuits.  If this doesn’t ring true or you’d simply like to ponder it with other students and faculty, then join us for an exposure to something beyond the standard narrative.
